D.C. dining east of the Anacostia River
Although some think it will change soon, hungry residents in D.C. east of the Anacostia — wards 7 and 8 — have few options other than fast food or carry-out. Officials know of only six restaurants with wait service for the area’s 140,000 residents.

Mama's Kitchen on Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue SE in Anacostia opened in October. The owners made a point of removing the grates over the windows and working to connect with customers. It is one of the few restaurants in the District east of the Anacostia River that provides sit-down service with a wait staff.
