William A. Nogay, retired Air Force major

William A. Nogay, 91, a retired Air Force major who worked for defense contractors on projects related to satellites and communications systems, died Jan. 14 at the Sunrise senior living facility in Silver Spring.

The former Hillcrest Heights resident had complications from dementia, said his daughter Elaine Nogay Walker.

Maj. Nogay retired from the Air Force in 1959 after 20 years of service. During World War II, he was a combat pilot in Europe and Africa. His subsequent assignments included postings at Andrews Air Force Base and in Illinois and St. John’s, Newfoundland.

After his military service, Maj. Nogay worked for about 15 years in the private sector for firms including Northrop Page Communications.

William Anthony Nogay was born in Youngstown, Ohio, and grew up in Weirton, W.V.

At age 19, he joined what was then the U.S. Army Air Corps. His decorations included the Distinguished Flying Cross and several awards of the Air Medal.

Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Mary Sagan Nogay of Silver Spring; five children, Claude Nogay of Cheverly, Elaine Nogay Walker of Bowling Green, Ky., Richard Nogay of Caldwell, N.J., Brian Nogay of Silver Spring and Justine Good of Mesa, Ariz.; 10 grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.
